5. Wir sind die Nacht (We Are The Night): A group of gorgeous female vampires terrorize Berlin (when they're not partying to wee hours of the morning), and have a bloody good time doing it. The opening sequence is smashing (literally), and gives new meaning to the term "inflight dining."
4. The Addiction: Yes, another vampire movie, but unlike We Are The Night, The Addiction is seriously mind-bending. A NYU graduate student is attacked and bitten by a vamp, and becomes twice shy about her new lifestyle. Kudos to Lili Taylor (as the unfortunate anthropology grad student), Annabella Sciorra (as the vampire who fangs Taylor), and Christopher Walken (at his creepy best, playing a vampire trying to live a "normal" life).
3. They Live: Directed and written by John Carpenter, this 1988 sci-fi/horror flick is about a race of space aliens secretly taking over our world through mind control and mass manipulation - something that mega-corporations now try to do on a regular basis. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper (the former World Wrestling Federation star) plays a drifter who discovers the evil plot and takes on the baddies with some lowdown full nelsons (and a few other weapons).
2. Martin: This 1976 horror masterpiece from George A. Romero begs the question: Is he or isn't he? More than another night stalker movie, Martin explores the inner turmoil of the title character as modernity clashes with Old World values in a mesmerizing (and intense) tale.
1. Excision: Hey, a would-be great surgeon has got to start somewhere, right? This disturbing (and I mean DISTURBING) story of a delusional young girl who starts her surgical practice early is not for the faint-of-heart - but, damn, it's a spellbinder! You'll be thinking about this thing for weeks. You have been warned.
