Trying to make a movie without a budget? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. The good news is that making a money cheaply is entirely possible if you have the right software on your computer. We’re going to go over what you need to have to make sure you finish your film while sticking to your minimal budget. If you follow our advice and tips, you may end up with the next Blair Witch Project on your hands. Stranger things have happened!
Movie Software for Small Budget Film Making
Here’s a list of some specific software you want to have on your computer if you’re doing film production with little to no budget at all.
Editing
When it comes to editing your masterpiece, you don’t need to spend a ton of money to get something that’s going to work.
- Lightworks (Best for linux)
We recommend using Lightworks, which runs best on Linux (Versions of MAC & windows are also available). Lightworks supports SD, HD, 2K and Red 4K broadcast formats.You can use its free version to make MPEG-4 format movies and the maximum resolution is 720p.
- Kate’s Video Toolkit
If you are a starter in editing, Kate is best. Simple format conversion tool saves your time. Linking two videos, trimming and inserting custom audios make it a complete basic tool.
- Avid Free DV (Best for mac)
They are not offering a free version now, but its older free version is available. Its simplicity makes the editing way easier.
- VSDC Free Video Editor
- MPEG Streamclip 1.2.1b6
- VirtualDub
Graphics
- Gimp
The good news is that there are a lot of tutorials out there for this so you’ll be able to know how to work it and get it to do what you want and runs on every operating system. It is the second most software in use (after adobe) and have huge community.
Seashore (Only available in Mac)
After gimp it is the best alternative for photoshop. Seashore and gimp share same native formats
- Paint.net
Only available in windows, and allot of plugin are available. Official tutorial videos are available.
- Pixia
A basic but useful tool. Made in japan (english version is available). Layers, masks and other basic tools are available.
Others include:
- Inkscape
- Photoplus
- CinePaint
- Mac Preview
- PhotoFiltre
- Audio Editing – For editing audio – which is important for a film – you’re going to want to try Audacity or Frinika or free . Both are great ways to edit your audio tracks until you get them sounding just right. The best part is that you’re not going to have to pay for these programs.
- Animations and Intros – Lastly, let’s look at some of the top software for creating animations for the beginning of your film.
- Others - Most of the tools require windows. so make sure Microsoft Framework is upgraded. Audio recorder (free from microsoft), keylogger tools (for saving your keystokes), skype (for communication), high specification PC (for graphic and other processing) are some other basic tools that you definitely needed.
