Is Filmmaking the Love of Your Life? (GENTLE THUG PRODUCTIONS)

By GENTLE THUG PRODUCTIONS

It's a brand new year - Happy New Year!

Most of us take stock of our lives when a new year rolls around, comparing and contrasting what we accomplished (or, what we didn't accomplish) in the previous year with what we want to accomplish in the new year.

It's a time of making resolutions, writing to-do lists, and looking to the future.

Here's a question: as filmmakers, what do we want to accomplish in 2018?

But that's the wrong question.

A better question is: as filmmakers, how passionate are we going to be about our filmmaking lives in 2018?

To create (or re-create) a filmmaking life for ourselves in the new year, we will need to fall in love - deeply and seductively - with our filmmaking life. It has to become not a habit or a job, but a lover.

Accomplishments are fine things, but they can't replace the passion needed to be a filmmaker. Our lives must be centered around filmmaking as a our own life force, something that we can't live without.

Successful, happy filmmakers are the ones who carry filmmaking around with them all of the time. No matter where they are and no matter what they're doing. In the boardroom. Flipping burgers. Changing a smelly diaper. Successful, happy filmmakers are always working out a scene from their next full-length feature in their minds, or thinking about two ideas for a documentary that keep bumping up against each other. There's no choice and no schedule. They are always in love, they are always doing it, they are always in filmmaking. As in love.

This new year, let yourself be as passionately pulled to your filmmaking lover as you would an affair of the heart - because it is an affair of the heart.

Time will fall away.

Love is the only thing that can create time.

If you want to be a filmmaker, stop qualifying yourself with everything else that's not filmmaking this new year. Put the love of your life into the center of your life. No excuses. No resolutions. As Nike says: Just Do It.
