The ABCs Of Independent Filmmaking At GENTLE THUG PRODUCTIONS...

Assessment.

Each potential project is thoroughly assessed prior to a "green light" to determine the following:

Pre-production requirements (e.g., how strong is the script being considered? How difficult will it be to secure locations? What are the projected financial requirements and what are the sources of secured funding? What are the requirements for minimal cast and crew? Is musical scoring (along with sound effects) already being considered and, if so, what are the enhancements necessary to strengthen the storyline? Have all necessary release forms been signed? Has catering been established and scheduled? Has an equipment list been established? If necessary, what arrangements have been made for the initial screening of the project?).

Production requirements (e.g., what are the minimum/maximum days/nights of shooting? Does the cast and crew have adequate time scheduled for rehearsals? Does the cast and crew have adequate resources to complete the project? Does the cast and crew possess the motivation necessary to complete the project in the best possible sense? Does each cast and crew member have a complete shooting script/schedule delivered to them no later than 30 days prior to actual shooting commencing? Are there special requirements necessary to production that need to be addressed as part of the production schedule? If necessary, are weather forecasts available at least one week prior to each shooting period?).

Post-production requirements (e.g., what system will be used for non-linear editing? What is the editing schedule? When will the first, second, and final drafts of the project be completed? Between the first and second draft, are additional shooting sequences (and/or voice-overs) required to strengthen the project (if so, when will they be scheduled?) Between the second and final draft, when (and where) will a test audience be scheduled to view the project, and how will comments/suggestions be utilized? Have musical enhancements and/or sound effects been revisited between the first and final draft?

Distribution requirements (e.g., how will this project be distributed? Have - or will - appropriate avenues been contacted and secured, if necessary? What online resources will be utilized? Have all arrangements been made for distribution (including graphic art promotion)? What media outlets will be contacted for increased visibility? Will this project be entered into film festivals (if so, which festivals, and what are the entrance requirements?) If the project will be available for retail sale (i.e., DVD distribution), what arrangements have been made for bar codes and other necessary retail requirements (if made available through online retail sale, what contingencies need to be addressed?).

Bethrothment.

Once a "green light" has been given to a project, all involved are expected to commit themselves to excellence and perseverance, and to a will to make the project an extension of their best selves. Throughout the project, all of the elements of Assessment will be constantly monitored and re-examined, to ensure that both the quality of the project and the well-being of the participants are fully integrated into the filmmaking process.

Closure.

Once a project is completed, the following questions will be asked:

What did we do right?

Where could we have improved?

Are we proud of what we did together? (If not, why not?)

Did we have fun? (If not, why not?)

Would we be willing to work together again? (If not, why not?)

What did we learn about each other?

What did we learn about ourseleves?
