Andy Warhol needs no introduction, but a new feature-length documentary by his family plans to show a side of the artist we've never seen before.
Entitled Uncle Andy, the film is being made by the artist's great grand-neice, Abby Warhola, who also works as a fashion photographer, and her partner, Jesse Best. The documentary recounts Warhol's childhood in Pittsburgh and the artist's progression to stardom using interviews from his closest living relatives.
The film's creators have over 10 hours of footage with Warhol's older brother, Paul Warhola, and have also interviewed a handful of his nieces and nephews over the past eight years. Using the relatives' stories, the documentary promises to show a much more intimate side of one of the world's most influential artists.
Rick Armstrong, spokesman for The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, which is not involved in the project, has already voiced his support for it. "[The viewers] are going to learn a side of Andy that they’ve never read or seen before. It’s a sweet family story. They knew a different man than what Warhol projected."
Warhol's family is currently trying to raise $175,000 on Kickstarter to fund the feature-length film. They said they chose Kickstarter over wealthy financial backers so that they could stay as independent as possible.
